Lambeth Council’s latest data doesn’t just map a demographic shift; it charts the vital signs of an education system in critical condition. For too long, the establishment has spoken of “school improvement” and “interventions”—top-down mandates that fail to diagnose the root of the illness.

Eduardo, standing with the community movement Lambeth Shake It Up (shakeitup.org.uk), refuses to accept the managed decline of our children’s future. But unlike traditional politicians, he knows that real solutions won’t be found in a manifesto. They must be debated, built, and ratified by the community itself. That is why Solidario GB is proud to stand alongside him in this fight.

The Anatomy of a Crisis: Brixton North by the Numbers

Our traditional school model is breaking under the weight of demographic and economic pressures. We are facing a perfect storm:

• The Pupil Roll Collapse: Lambeth’s under-20 population is projected to plummet by 14% (8,400 fewer children) by 2033. Brixton North is ground zero, facing a staggering 19% decrease. This doesn’t just mean empty classrooms; it threatens the closure of historic institutions like St Martin-in-the-Fields.
• Concentrated Need: In Brixton Town Centre, 43.4% of pupils are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM)—far above the Lambeth average. The families who remain in the area face the highest socio-economic hurdles, placing immense strain on shrinking resources.
• Systemic Failure at GCSE: The Attainment 8 score for Brixton pupils has collapsed to just 30.7 in 2023—a staggering 14 points below the national average. Only 42% of our young people achieve a grade 4 or above in English and maths.
• Attendance as an Alarm: With secondary school attendance stuck at just 88.3%, this isn’t a “truancy” problem. It is a clear signal that the current system is failing to engage a substantial portion of its students.

The Engine of Change: Our Weekly Community Assemblies

Tinkering at the edges is no longer an option. Radical change requires a democratic mandate from the people who live here. That is why Eduardo, Lambeth Shake It Up, and Solidario GB are inviting you to the Community Assemblies on Education.

We meet every Monday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at International House, Brixton (located opposite Brixton police station).

These are not “consultations” where officials speak at you. These are working sessions to debate three radical propositions that Eduardo is bringing to the table for your input and support:

1. A Community Education Campus: Should we dissolve rigid catchment boundaries to create a single, multi-site network? Imagine one site dedicated to Creative Arts, another to Health and Social Care, and a third to Academic study—ensuring every student in Brixton North has access to specialist facilities, regardless of their postcode.
2. Redefining the Educator: Can we bridge the gap between school and the real world by hiring Youth & Community Educators? This means bringing local artists, coders, and mechanics into our schools to work alongside teachers, making learning project-based and relevant.
3. The “Community Guarantee”: How do we ensure every 18-year-old graduates with a portfolio of real achievements—technical certifications, community leadership, and project work—that holds tangible value, even if the traditional exam system fails them?
